Understanding Depth of Field:

Beginners Guide: Hello everyone, its me Prajwol, in  this article, I will  provide you with the information  about  the  depth  of  field. So, lets understand the  details  about  the  depth of  field in Photography.

Depth of Field

Depth of Field is the area or zone of  focus within the  image that appears to be sharp. More precisely speaking, its the distance between the nearest as-well as the farthest object that are in a sharp focus within  an image  that  is  captured with a DSLR (Any Camera). The sharp focus is  obtained using a property of  focus which  is called the "Circle  of  Confusion". The prominent factor that affects the Depth of Field includes Aperture, Distance to the  Subject, the  acceptable circle of confusion size and the focal length.  We can overcome the Limitations of Depth of field using several techniques, which includes various techniques as well as the equipment.

Depth of Field

The  approximate Depth of Field can be given by:

DOF ̴ 2u2Nc/f2

Here, c starts for Confusion, F=Focal Length, N=F-Number u=Distance to Subject.

So, the premiere factors affecting the  Depth of Field are:

1. Aperture

2. Focal Length

3. Distance

APERTURE: Understanding Depth of Field

If f number is smaller larger is  the aperture hole, more light enters to the  camera sensor. As, a result the background will be out of focus. It  is called as  the shallow depth of field.

Likewise, if the f number is the larger, smaller then the aperture hole will be smaller, as a  result there will be lesser  light to  the camera sensor. Hence, the  background will be in Deeper Focus.

FOCAL LENGTH: Understanding Depth of Field

The next thing is Focal  Length  which  is measured in  (mm) in  Camera, focal  length is the distance between  the lens and the sensor. So, below are  the functions of Focal  Length:

1. If the focal length of camera is larger, then there will be shallower depth of field. The background will be out of Focus.

2. Similarly, if the focal length of camera is smaller, then there will be Deeper Depth of Field, as the Background will be in the range  of  focus.

DISTANCE: Understanding Depth of Field

Now, the next term which  is very important with respect to  the Depth  of Field, then its  the Distance. So, the  distance  is  the gap between the. camera and the subject.

The premiere functions of Distance includes:

1. Nearer  the camera to  the subject, it creates shallower DOF (Depth of Field),  which signifies that the background will be out  of  focus.

2. Likewise, farther is the camera  to the subject, It will create a Deeper Depth of Field, as the  background remains in Focus.

Thus, depth of field is a premiere compositional element in many ways, as its the most important tool in photographic field. Its the key component to taken into consideration while clicking a striking image.

So, its really important have a technical knowledge of depth of field  for every photographer.
