Basics of Photography | What is Photography? | Explained

Earn Money with Photography, as this article will guide you with the Basics of Photography. The scope of  Photography is just insane. Photography  is one of the most creative, progressive as well as expressive form of arts.

The article will focus on the creeds and and potentials of photography and the premiere principle of photography. The term Photo Means Light  and Graphy means to Sketch. Moreover, photography is an art, practice as well as the, application which is operable to create durable images, that records the light, either electronically by using image sensor or there is another way alternative and  that is chemically with  the help of a  light-sensitive  material and that is photographic film.  Mainly, there is a  lens in a camera and that is used to focus the reflection of light which is emitted from an particular object into the real image on the light sensitive surface inside a camera within the period of the time exposure.

There are various equipment's that are used to take Photographs and the most common in the present era includes the DSLR, Mobile Phone, Go-pro and so on. Meanwhile, DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflect. Presently, there are Mirrorless camera and mirror camera, mirrorless cameras are very useful for videography and also 4k Videography is very trendy these days  with the help of Mirrorless Cameras.

Now, lets move towards the basics of Photography, as well all know Photography is  a pioneer form of arts. So, the seven principle of art and design includes balance, rhythm, pattern, emphasis, contrast, unity and movement. All these parts are  very useful in  creating  a  perfect composition in photography. Moreover, using  the elements of art and design, such as the line, shape/form, space, value, color and texture in-order to create a composition as a whole is a very vital part of photography too. There is a great importance of composition rule in photography.

Some of the premiere Composition and Framing, rules under the Basics of Photography includes:

  • Rule of Thirds
  • Golden Triangle
  • Block  Framing
  • Lead-line Triangle
  • Symmetry
  • Diagonal
  • Reflection

There should be a clear concept on the different composition  rules, as the composition related rules will be very  useful for the  perfect posture as well as the shape to the photograph.

Using a DSLR in a Manual mode  is very important for giving the proper  Justice to  our work in Photography. So, having proper knowledge of Light Meter/Exposure Meters are very vital aspects in Manual  photography. Meanwhile, there is a great importance of Exposure Triangle in Manual photography.

Importantly, exposure triangle is a very important thing in Photography, which is a blend of these three things

  • Aperture
  • Shutterspeed
  • ISO

Aperture is the opening of lens diaphragm via which the light passes through. In simple word Aperture is the opening and closing of the lens. Lesser the focal stop or the F stop the hole is bigger and more the focal stop the hole will smaller.

Importantly, in a simplified way, smaller the "f" number, larger the, aperture hole, more light passes into the sensor. Bigger the "f" number, smaller the aperture hole, lens light passes into the  Sensor.

Shutter Speed is the measurement of time (Exposition Time), the shutter is open, which is shown in seconds or fractions of a second: 1s, 1/2s, 1/4s....1/250s, 1/500s. Simply, the faster the shutter speed the easier it is to photograph the subject without blur and "freeze" motion as well as the smaller effects of camera shake. Shutter speed controls the light. In slow shutter  speed more light will enter, while in faster Shutter speed lesser light passes. Hence, knowing the exposition/light meter in a correct way is very important in modern photography. Shutter  speed is also used in the wildlife photography, as its used to control  the motion of the picture.

ISO is the reaction of the sensor to the light. ISO is mainly an electronic light booster. The minimum of Electronic light booster or ISO is 100 while the Maximum tends to be 3200. So, for digital photography, ISO refers to the sensitivity, which is the gain of the signal of the camera's sensor.  Importantly, the, ISO setting is one of three elements which is used to control the exposure, while the other two are f/stop (Aperture) and the next one is shutter speed. Higher the ISO number higher will be the  grain i.e, noise. Moreover, with the film cameras, using a higher ISO  film, like ISO  400 to  100 mainly leads to giving more grain in comparison to the lower ISO.

ISO is the best option to use effectively when both Aperture and Shutter speed don't  operate more effectively. Its a light sensitivity of the sensor. ISO can go from 100 (low) to 3200 (high), which is, the maximum.

Hence, the exposure triangle is a premiere part of the Photography principle. These things not only operate in the basics of photography, but also they are the pioneer stack holders of main photography credentials.

Types of  Lens-Basics of Photography:

Lens in DSLR are very important, as the lens are the transparent signals in digital photography. Especially, there are three types of lenses. These lens includes wide angle lens, Normal Lens/Standard  Lens and  the Tele-photo Lens. So, below are some basic terms of these lenses.

1. Wide Angle Lens:

Wide angle lenses are below 50 mm focal length. The main applications of the wide angle lens includes: landscape group/photo, longshots, etc.

2. Normal Lens/Standard Lens:

Normal lenses are equivalent to 50 mm focal length, which is also known as the prime lens according  to the  technical terms of photography. The  main application of the Normal/Standard lens  includes Portrait, Mid-Shots, Single Photo.

3. Tele-Photo Lens:

Tele-photo lens is another important lens for DSLR, as the lens  above 50 mm focal length are  the tele, photo lenses., Tele-Photo lenses are  used to shoot the portrait, close up, subject as well  as the object in distance.

Likewise, there are special types of lenses which includes Fish Eye Lens, Ultra-Wide Lens, Macro Lens and the Tele Converter Lens. Fish Eye Lens/Ultra Wide Lens are very useful in product photography as they normally have the lens below 10mm. Also, the macro lenses are used in Product Photography, as these lenses are used to capture very small subjects. Teleconverter lenses act  opposite to the macro lenses, as the tele converter lenses  are used for very long distance photography.

There are also prime as well as the zoom lenses which have a significant importance in photography. Prime lenses have fixed focal length (50mm, 100mm, 200mm) and have the constant aperture. While the zoom lens have many varieties to choose from. Also, in the zoom lens both Constant as well as the variable aperture are available.
